Faces of Zambia

A year ago I was blessed with an opportunity to check an item off my bucket list and visit Africa for the first time. Michelle Stumpe, founder of Children of Conservation, reached out and asked if I would be interested in going with them to document the opening of a new school in northern Zambia. Interested wasn't the word... thrilled is more accurate.

The challenge was being away from my three month old son for a couple weeks. After weighing my options I quickly accepted with no time to spare. I literally had 18 days to get all of the required vaccines and my yellow card added to my passport otherwise I would have been stopped at customs entering Zambia. Funny thing was that many of the vaccines were required to protect the animals, not myself. We would be interacting with orphaned elephants at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Kenya and rescued chimpanzees at Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage in Zambia.

Elephants and chimps were both dreams come true for me, but the highlight of the trip was getting to know the children and families of the small Twompane community where we were staying in Zambia.

A year before our trip, Children of Conservation began construction on a new school building which would offer education beyond the sixth grade level. To put that into perspective, until June of 2017 this small community's education stopped at the sixth grade. At that point children either found education opportunities outside of the village with very little transportation, or they began working in the farms or at Chimfunshi.

During this time I shot a couple thousand photos covering meetings with officials, safari expeditions, parties and celebrations honoring the work Children of Conservation is doing. I've pulled some selections featuring the Twompane community, some portraits and some landscapes, and published a book titled Faces of Zambia.

A portion of any licensing fees, book orders and print sales will be donated back to Children of Conservation to help them continue their efforts across Africa.

Here's a set from what turned out to be one of my favorite shoots of the year. Collaborating with model Taylor Adkins and mua Lida Parks, we shot this entire set at a local park in two hours!

Outdoor Session with Julia and Lindsay

Julia and Lindsay, both represented by Ursula Wiedmann Models, came out for a simple outdoor session. By "simple" I mean we shot mostly natural light with minimal, if any, retouching. We started out at the park and finished up with a walk around Buckhead for some street looks.

Sloss Furnaces shoot with Chris Rost

It's been a crazy couple of months so I thought I'd try to do a little catch up on the blog. Here are a few samples from a recent shoot with model Chris Rost of Ursula Wiedmann Models. When Chris told me he spends half his time in northern Alabama I decided to set up our session at Sloss Furnaces in Birmingham. A quick phone call, a short liability form and small donation fee is all it took. Being the middle of the week, we pretty much had the place to ourselves and it was great to get out of Atlanta for a day.

Actress Julia Denton contacted me about doing a multi-look session to update her image portfolio. Being an actor, she asked that we concentrate on a cinematic feel so we started out with some studio work then went outside for a few action looks. Hair and makeup was done on site by Grace Armas.

Recent Work: Outdoor session with Dillan Moore

I've worked with Dillan a number of times this year and he's one of the nicest guys you could ever have at a shoot. He came out for a recent outdoor session at Arabia Mountain and here are a few single selections from his set. He stays busy concentrating on his acting and modeling career in addition to his own passion as a photographer, so I was very happy that he took time for this shoot.

Recent Work: Mood Portrait Series

I'm always thinking up photo ideas that I want to explore and I've been wanting to do a series of portraits with a mystic feel for quite a while. I was recently on a shoot with two amazing models at a great location and couldn't help but work these in. Working with strobes outdoors gives so much flexibility to balance out, or even overpower the natural sunlight. That's exactly what we did here.

This series was shot at around 11:30am on a partly cloudy day. Natural light is pretty harsh at this time of day so to compensate, I underexposed the background and the model is lit with a strobe in a 35" octabox just off camera. For the shot with the two of them, the main light is set on Dianna and there is a hand-held diffused speed light on Dillan. The foggy, misty look was enhanced in post.

Here are a few of my favorites from an outdoor session with Dianna Grant, represented here in Atlanta by Ursula Wiedmann Models (UWM). For this session we had a 6:30am call time and nearly a 1-mile hike from the cars to our shooting location. Hair, makeup and wardrobe assistance was done on site by Grace Armas.

Recent Work: Peruvian Warm Wear

Product photography by Jeff Walton

I am always thrilled when I am presented with the opportunity to shoot advertising photography for a startup company. It is an enormous responsibility to capture the look and quality of the product while helping define the look of the brand. In this case, I worked with Heather and Daniel from Peruvian Winter Wear, an emerging accessory brand from north Geargia that is offering hand-made Peruvian scarves and shawls here in the US.

So much work goes into finding the perfect location, defining the mood and portraying the product in the best light. In cases like this, it is more than just about the product itself: There's an incredible opportunity as a photographer to be creative and produce beautiful lifestyle imagery to represent the brand.

At the end of the day, I was thrilled with the results and can't wait to see what is yet to come from Heather and Daniel’s venture! If you're interested you can order a hand-made Alpaca scarf from their Etsy page.
